Could new drug cure nearly any viral infection? Technology shows promise against common cold, influenza and other ailments, researchers say

ScienceDaily (2011-08-26) — Most bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin, discovered decades ago. However, such drugs are useless against viral infections, including influenza, the common cold, and deadly hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola. Now, in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

Wow! If this stuff doesn’t run into any showstoppers … we might have a way to fight and kill ALL viral infections. This is historic maybe …

Bye Bye dentist drill – Filling without drilling: Pain-free way of tackling dental decay reverses acid damage and re-builds teeth

ScienceDaily (2011-08-22) — The cause of ALS, a fatal disease that paralyzes its victims, has long eluded scientists. But a new study for the first time has identified a common cause of all forms of ALS, opening a new field to find a treatment. The cause is a broken recycling system in the neurons in the spinal cord and brain that results in severely damaged cells. The finding also may have a wider role in other dementias such as Alzheimer’s.

Bye Bye dentist drill, Bye Bye cavities. Hello teeth with no nasty holes. And Bye Bye to two more sources of dental pain!

ALS milestone – Common cause of all forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) discovered

Now they know what needs fixing. Figuring out how to do that and how it gets broken may take a while but … it will stop being a horrible lingering death sentence ‘sooner’ rather than ‘later’. Yahoo!! Science beats mumbo-jumbo ooga-booga any day 🙂

Going to start up a new thread about science related articles … ‘cuz it’s more interesting than other shit.

My own personal crack-pot science related ramblings I’m calling psycho-ceramics 🙂

And, or course, I have a pet project baking in the kiln in my head and I hope to use this blogging tool as a way of keeping this interest going.
This project involves the Solar Chimney concept and it’s been turning over and over in the back of my head since March … I’m using the tag ‘xolar’ to refer to it.

But xolar isn’t the only interesting thing … oh no – science is the one area of human endeavor that generates surprises on a regular basis. And that’s cool!
